General information
With "Message Template Editor PRO" you can create appealing, deeply personalized messages using such features as variables, and IF | THEN | ELSE operators. However, sometimes using standard LinkedIn variables such as 'position', 'company', 'mutual contact' is not enough to customize your automated message when you want to refer to a very specific piece of information. Exactly for this purpose Linked Helper allows uploading custom fields (or custom variables as others call them). For this to work Linked Helper needs a file with 2 columns - profile_url and a column with your custom field.
Please note that:
- "Custom fields" is a feature of the Custom template variables plug-in, you can activate it in the Plug-in store
- There are 3 levels of custom fields (CRM-, campaign-, action-level), and the action-level custom field is not available in any other action apart from the one it was uploaded to. The same applies to the campaign-level custom field: it is available to all action but only in one campaign. CRM custom variables can be used in any campaign and any action.
What you need to do first is to:
- Download profiles for which you want to apply custom fields
- Open the file with MS Excel or Google Sheets (Note: Unfortunately, MS Excel doesn’t support CSV files in the same way as .xslx files. But you are still able to open any CSV file with MS Excel. Please check here how to do that).
- Add custom fields and save the file. The name of the column with the custom field has to start with "cs_" for Linked Helper to recognize it. As an example in the screenshot below, we added 3 new custom fields - cs_event, cs_year, cs_where (Note: you do not need to keep other columns except profile_url, so you can either delete the rest columns leaving only profile_url and your custom fields or just add custom fields as new columns)
There are 3 levels of custom fields where you can upload this file:
CRM Level
A custom field becomes a CRM level custom variable when you upload it directly to Linked Helper's CRM.
Basically, such custom fields will be applied to all your campaigns, but it will be available only for those profiles whose URLs were uploaded within the CSV file and had a value in the column with a custom field. To upload a file with custom fields to CRM:
- Activate Custom template variables plug-in from the Plug-in store
- Navigate to the CRM tab in Linked Helper interface and click on the "Custom fields" button
- Select the file with your custom fields and click on "Upload"
Now if you navigate to the "Message" tab for any action in any campaign, you will see that this custom field is available. Please keep in mind, that it will work only with profiles whose URLs were uploaded with the file:
Also, you can add a custom field of CRM level directly for a profile in CRM. To do that:
- Navigate to the "CRM" tab and click on any profile to open it:
- Here you can add a custom field of CRM level for this profile:
Please note that opening a profile through the "CRM" tab will show you only custom fields of the CRM level.
Campaign level
A custom field works on a campaign level when you upload it to your campaign. Custom fields in this case will work for this campaign's actions.
Important:
- the Campaign level has a higher priority than CRM level - that means if you upload 2 custom fields with the same column name but different content to CRM and to the campaign, the custom field that was uploaded to the campaign will overwrite the custom field that was uploaded to CRM;
- campaign level custom fields are available only for the current campaign.
To apply custom fields on a campaign level, please:
- Activate Custom template variables plug-in from the Plug-in store
- Choose the needed campaign from dropdown menu and go to the campaign where you want to upload custom fields:
- Go to the "Lists" tab and click on "Custom fields":
- Select the file with your custom field and click "Upload":
- This custom field can be used only with the campaign, where you uploaded it:
- If you open a profile from your campaign (from the "Lists" tab of your campaign)
- You will be able to view and add custom fields of both CRM and campaign levels:
Action level
The custom field works on the Action level when you upload it to a certain action of your campaign and it this case this custom field will be available only in this action.
Important:
- action level has a higher priority than campaign and CRM levels - that means if you upload 2 custom fields with the same column name but different content to CRM and / or to the campaign and to action, the custom field that was uploaded to action will overwrite the custom field that was uploaded to CRM or campaign;
- action level custom fields are available only for the current action.
To apply custom fields on an action level, please:
- Activate Custom template variables plug-in from the Plug-in store
- Choose the needed campaign from dropdown menu and go to the campaign where you want to upload custom fields:
- From "Workflow" go to action where you want to upload this custom field (e.g. you want to add custom fields for "Invite 2nd/3rd" action):
- Click on "Custom fields", select the file with your custom field, and click "Upload":
This custom field will be available only for this "Invite 2nd/3rd" action, you won't be able to use it in further actions of your workflow:
If you open a profile in an Action, you will be able to view and add custom fields of all CRM, campaign, and action levels:
